The Graduate School of Banking at Colorado (GSBC) is pleased to announce Charles “Charlie” Funk as the 31st recipient of the James C. Scarboro Award.

The James C. Scarboro Award, named for one of the co-founders of GSBC, is awarded by the school’s board of trustees to a community banking advocate who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and a passion for banker education throughout his or her career. The GSBC Board of Trustees voted to award the thirty-first award to Funk on March 31, 2023.

He served as the Chief Executive Officer of MidWestOne Bank, headquartered in Iowa City, Iowa, from 2008-2022 and is now a member of its board of directors. A tremendous advocate of the banking industry, he is especially passionate about education and development, having served on GSBC’s faculty from 2001-2016.

“Charlie’s class on serving as a community bank CEO is legendary at GSBC,” said GSBC President Michael Stevens. “He modeled the way in community service and employee development.”

A past instructor for the Iowa School of Banking and Stonier Graduate School of Banking, board member of Folience and the American Bankers Association and chairman of the Iowa Bankers Association from 2010-2011, Funk significantly impacted banking by leading and inspiring people from various industry platforms.

Funk was recognized during GSBC’s 72nd Annual School Session graduation ceremony in Boulder, Colo., on July 27.
