From Managing to Leading: How GSBC’s BankRole Course Prepares Third-Year Students for Strategic Leadership

Leadership is a progression. As responsibilities grow, so does the need to think beyond day-to-day performance and take a broader view to discern the future direction of the organization.

At the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado (GSBC), third-year students will take that next step through BankRole: Managing to Leading, a course designed to expand their perspective from operating a bank to guiding its future.

Building on the Simulation Experience

Following the first week’s bank management simulation course, where students work in teams to operate a financial institution, third-year students will move into a new phase of the experience.  BankRole: Managing to Leading builds on the foundation established in the simulation and challenges students to adopt a longer, more strategic view. Working within the same teams, they will begin to think intentionally about the long-term vision of the bank and its future leadership.

As they complete the final quarters of the simulation, the focus shifts from execution to direction, aligning decisions with a broader, forward-looking strategy.

Looking Beyond Today’s Performance

For community bank leaders, success is measured not only by current results, but by the institution’s ability to remain strong, relevant and responsive over time.

This course encourages students to think in those terms, considering what it takes to sustain an organization that continues to serve its customers and communities well into the future.

Turning Vision into Direction

Throughout the course, students will explore how to translate long-term thinking into actionable plans. This includes evaluating the people, technology and structure needed to support the bank’s future, as well as strengthening their ability to lead through change.

They will also reflect on their own role in that process, gaining clarity on how they can grow into leaders who shape direction, not just manage outcomes.

Preparing for What’s Next

By connecting the simulation experience with forecasting and scenario planning, BankRole: Managing to Leading reinforces GSBC’s commitment to practical, leadership-focused education.

Third-year students will leave not only with a clearer sense of where their simulated institution is headed, but with the mindset and tools to help guide the future of their own organizations. Browse full third-year curriculum.
