This summer, GSBC launched its first-ever Session Theme, Rooted for Growth, that invited students to reflect on their journey through a storytelling challenge that celebrated what sets this school apart: learning that digs deep and leadership that rises boldly.
The challenge wasn’t just symbolic; it was intentional. Rooted for Growth invited students to reflect on meaningful moments that were shaping not just their time in Boulder but the kind of leaders they’re becoming.
To understand its impact, GSBC invited feedback from across the 460-person student body. Whether through structured touchpoints or informal conversations, students described how the theme kept them grounded in purpose and energized to apply what they were learning.
“It made me think about more than just the work. It made me think about why I’m here and how I want to show up when I go back home.”
That clarity came to life through the three pillars that defined the theme: Knowledge, Connection & Momentum.
Knowledge: Confidence Through Curiosity
Many students came to GSBC wondering if they belonged in the same room as executives, experts or seasoned regulators. But as they explored subjects like ALCO, strategic planning and organizational behavior, something shifted. They realized that knowing everything isn’t the goal—being open to growth is. They discovered that even the most accomplished leaders wrestle with doubt and that asking better questions is often more powerful than having all the answers:
“I’ve felt imposter syndrome for years but learning that even CEOs feel that way changed how I view myself. I do belong here.”
Connection: From Classmates to Lifelines
At GSBC, connection isn’t a byproduct of group work, it’s a foundational part of the experience. Through peer groups, state dinners, hallway conversations and even early morning hikes, students formed relationships that pushed them past comfort and into community. They leaned on each other, opened up, encouraged one another and came away not just with new perspectives, but new people in their corner:
“Growth rarely happens in isolation. It happens in community.”
Momentum: Action Beyond the Classroom
What is learned in Boulder doesn’t stay in Boulder. Students left energized with new tools, sharper perspectives and the clarity to act. Some planned to launch mentorship programs in their organizations. Others were ready to inspire their banks to take on strategic planning back home. Several walked away with a clear next step they hadn’t seen before. And more than one student realized that the missing piece in their team or culture… might just be them:
“Today is the day and I am the one.”
Why It Matters
The Rooted for Growth challenge was more than a reflective exercise. It was a catalyst – an invitation – to be intentional every single day at GSBC and to return home ready to lead with clarity, courage and purpose.
And that’s what makes GSBC different.
The GSBC experience blends technical excellence with intentional leadership development, inviting students to actively participate in their leadership transformation. Relationships aren’t transactional, they’re lifelong. Leadership doesn’t begin at graduation; it begins when a student says ‘yes’ to embarking on a bold journey and submitting their application to GSBC.
